Pioneer Community Energy (Pioneer) signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Shell Energy North America (Shell Energy) to purchase 1.375 million megawatt hours (MWh), of renewable energy with potential for an additional 300,000 MWh over the next 11 years.

The power purchase is part of Pioneer’s plan to meet the California Public Utility Commission’s Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirement that 65% of all renewable energy purchases be secured through contracts with terms longer than 10 years.

In addition to meeting a regulatory requirement, the PPA with Shell Energy provides Pioneer with certainty of energy delivery in time to meet the RPS compliance deadline due to Shell Energy’s portfolio of existing resources.  Multiple resources also increase security of supply as any replacement power required should always be available.
